Non Toxic Home

One of leading causes of illness is due to the toxic chemicals

that we breath, eat, and get on our skin.

Don't Put Your Family's Health At Risk

Many health problems such as breathing problems, skin problems, birth defects, hormonal disruptions, and even cancer could be the direct result of toxic chemicals found in the food, personal care products, and home care products that are in your home right now!

  • The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has identified over 880 toxic or potentially cancer causing agents in common personal care products found in the home.

The American Cancer Society statistics show a leap in the cancer rate from 1 in 1000 in the early 1900's to today's ominous rate of 1 in 3.

In the last 50 years, over 75,000 synthetic chemicals registered with the Environmental Protection Agency have been introduced into our daily life. Of those, few have been tested for safety, many have never been tested at all, and less than one percent have been classified as dangerous. In fact, until a synthetic chemical has caused damage and devastation to human life or the environment, is proven beyond a shadow of doubt to be dangerous, there is no precautionary restriction of use.

Look for natural solutions,

don't use a can of chemical-filled bug spray !

Save the environment, save yourself money, and reduce your toxic environment and carbon footprint.

How to Create a Non Toxic Home.

You must start by eliminating toxic products from you home and using nontoxic alternatives such as safe personal care products and safe home care products such as natural cleaners that are non toxic cleaners.

  • Avoid cosmetics, toothpastes, shampoos, and skin care products that contain toxic contaminants which can be readily absorbed through our skin and into the blood stream.

  • Choosing nontoxic alternatives, can greatly reduce environmental pollution and is an important step toward help our planet become more eco friendly. Toxic chemicals that get rinsed off our skin end up contaminating our water supplies. This creates a public safety concerns for humans and wildlife.

  • Use only environmentally friendly cleaners, because toxic household cleaners are three times more likely to cause cancer than air pollution.

Pesticides, Plastic wrap. Non-stick cookware, Bug spray. Household cleaners, Plastic , garden hoses. hairspray, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, laundry detergent, Chlorine, etc.

Many modern cleaning products contain harmful irritants and dyes. Some even contain solvents. Oven cleaners for example commonly contain toxic chemicals.

Plug-in air fresheners - the latest advertising executives dream product - have been linked to shortness of breath. whole supermarket aisles are practically given over to selling these products.

Many of these substances can affect anyone who comes into contact with them. People who are allergic or who have other health problems can be severely affected in some cases. Some perfumes may also cause allergic reactions.

Fortunately, there are plenty of options for anyone who wants to have a clean, fresh house without the use of toxic products. Chillozone has your answers.

By using non-toxic cleaners we can live in a less toxic home environment. This helps us to be healthier. Most of them break down harmlessly in the water and soil, causing no damage to wildlife and plant life or even humans.

The good news is that there are loads of simple, cheap and effective products which can be used for cleaning your home. You can do practically every normal household task using bio-friendly, non-toxic cleaners.

You can wash your clothes, wash and polish your floors, clean the windows, disinfect drains, freshen rooms and much more, all without using any really harmful products.

Cleaning with salt:

Salt dissolves in water and can be mixed with several other natural cleaners. Vinegar, lemon juice, and washing up liquid all combine safely with salt for various cleaning tasks. Borax can be used with salt for cleaning carpets and other tasks.

Salt can be mixed with vinegar to create a good general purpose cleaner. Don't use it on waxed surfaces, marble or linoleum because the vinegar may be too strong for the surface and cause damage. This vinegar and salt mix can be used for general cleaning about the house. Swab down surfaces and clean inside the fridge and cupboards with it.

It will also remove tea and coffee stains from cups and teapots, etc.

Glass and tiles will come up shining from washing with it.

Would you knowingly breathe formaldehyde? How about pesticides or toxins like sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, mercury, cadmium, benzene, lead, ammonia or mold? Well, chances are, you are breathing at least some of those chemicals every day, in your own home. For examples, acrylic and enamel paints contain a lot of the chemicals just mentioned. This article is about creating a more toxin-free living environment.

Avoid ALL scented products ("fragrance" as an ingredient) - including all perfumes, colognes, after-shaves, personal-care products, air fresheners, potpourri, etc. Be careful about certain "unscented" products that use "masking fragrance" to cover up the original fragrance - these are doubly toxic!

Avoid ALL fabric softeners, dryer sheets, scented detergents, etc. These products are VERY toxic and very harmful to the environment as well.

Avoid ALL pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and fertilizers. Pesticides are neuro-toxins (affect the central nervous system), and they don't know the difference between the BUGS and YOU! For fleas, roaches, ants, etc., use diatomic earth, boric acid, and nematodes. You can get these from health food stores and pet supply stores.

Use only non-toxic cleaning products and personal-care products.

Drink and bathe in filtered water. Taking a shower in chlorinated water causes the chlorine to go right into your blood stream. You can purchase shower filters that easily attach to your shower nozzle from water-supply stores . Also avoid swimming in chlorinated pools, use other methods such as ozone.

Eat organic food (food grown without pesticides or fertilizers) as often as possible. Avoid processed foods, foods with colors and dyes, preservatives, etc. NEVER consume products containing "NutraSweet" (aspartame). It breaks down into formic acid ("ant-sting poison") and methanol (wood alcohol) in your body!

Wear only natural-fiber clothing (100% cotton, linen, wool, or silk). Make sure the clothes are NOT "permanent press" or "wrinkle resistant" - these clothes have been treated with formaldehyde that does NOT wash out!

Use only 100% cotton, wool, or pure silk bed linens and blankets. Avoid "no-iron" or "wrinkle-resistant".

As much as possible, avoid plastics (store food in glass jars), particle-board, plywood, glues, inks, paints, foam rubber, vinyl, carpet, synthetic rugs, varnishes, solvents, etc.

Open your windows as often as possible! Even in the most polluted cities, the outdoor air has been found to be less toxic than the indoor air! Amazing, isn't it?!

GENERAL CLEANING:

  • White Vinegar (cleans windows, counter tops, chrome, grease, floors, etc.)

  • Bon Ami (sinks, etc.) - near the "Comet"

  • Borax (toilets, tubs, floors) - disinfects, deodorizes, kills mold and mildew, and great for laundry - in the detergent aisle

  • Baking Soda - sit around in small bowls to absorb odors; also cleans sinks, great for laundry, etc.

  • Lemons (clean windows, sinks, grease, etc.). You can also use lemons as an air freshener. Cut 4 lemons into 4ths. Put in a pot and cover with water. Simmer for about an hour and turn heat off. Will fill room with wonderful aroma!

  • Furniture polish: any vegetable oil, lemon oil, etc. (2 parts oil, 1 part lemon juice works great!), , or any other brand that is all natural and fragrance-free

  • Nature Clean, Lifetree, Seventh Generation.

  • Nature Clean or Ecover automatic dishwashing detergent (or any that do not contain chlorine or fragrance)

  • Tip: To get stuck-on food off a pot/pan, just sprinkle salt and cool water in it and let it sit a while, then wipe clean!

FOR LAUNDRY:

  • Baking soda - 1 cup per load

  • Sodium Perborate - a chlorine-free, natural bleaching mineral

  • White Vinegar - 1 cup in rinse cycle to soften clothes and remove odors and residual detergent

  • Use one of the suggested dishwashing liquids for spot removal - great for grease, ketchup, and other stains!

  • Dr. Bronner's Unscented Baby Castile Liquid Soap

  • Country Save, Earthrite, Ecover, or Seventh Generation laundry detergent

  • All-Free, Cheer-Free, or Tide-Free if you feel you must use a "regular" detergent. These products at least do not contain fragrances, but they do contain other petrochemicals and are not the "best" choice if you are trying to reduce your toxic exposures.

Personal-Care Products

NOTE: Use nothing on your skin that you'd be afraid to eat! Products are absorbed through the skin into the blood stream just as if you'd eaten them!

SHAMPOO:

  • Tea Tree Shampoo (contains no sodium laurel sulfate or propylene glycol!)

  • Dr. Bronner's Unscented Baby Castile Liquid Soap

SOAP:

  • Sirena Pure Coconut Oil Soap

  • Pure Olive Oil Soap

  • Dr. Bronner's Castile Liquid Soap

DEODORANT:

  • Mineral crystal stones (or spray) - least toxic choice

  • Queen Helene, Unscented Deodorant - does contain propylene glycol, a petrochemical, but at least it's unscented!

  • le Stick French Green Clay Deodorant

  • Baking soda

  • French clay powder

  • Corn Starch (great for powder!) - in the baking section of your grocery store (do not use if you have a problem with yeast infections since corn can "feed" the yeast!)

TOOTHPASTE: (Avoid fluoride - it's toxic and doesn't help cavities anyway!)

  • Tom's of Maine

  • NEEM

  • Tea Tree Oil Toothpaste - various brands

  • Jason's (contains no sodium laurel sulfate or propylene glycol!)

  • Baking Soda, Salt, Hydrogen Peroxide

FACE CREAMS AND BODY LOTIONS:

  • Plain almond oil or olive oil

  • almond oil or olive oil and Aloe moisture lotion

  • Aloe vera gel

  • Coconut oil

  • Vitamin E

  • Cocoa butter, plain or with almond oil only

  • Any fragrance-free moisturizer from regular stores would be better than scented moisturizers.

HAIRSPRAY or GEL:

  • For the most part - AVOID!! Most hair sprays contain nerve gas and propane or butane (yes, the stuff that goes into your gas heater and lighters!) and are VERY toxic. Cut hair in style that does not require sprays. You can also make a home-made gel by dissolving 1 package of unflavored gelatin (not "Jello"!) in 2 cups of hot water. Store in a glass jar in the refrigerator.

  • Plain Aloe Vera gel!

  • almond oil or olive oil and Aloe vera gel

FEMININE HYGIENE:

(NOTE: FDA studies have shown commercially-bought pads and tampons to contain harmful substances. The traditional cotton used in these products has been grown using as many as 35 different pesticides and chemicals and is then chlorine bleached creating dioxin in the process.)

  • Natural and re-useable tampons: Use a couple of fine-holed sea-sponges (about as big as a palm - you can always cut them if too big). Clean and boil very carefully (they shrink a bit when boiled) and then thread a string through. Once wet, they turn very soft and are effective absorbers.

SHAVING CREAM:

  • Plain aloe vera gel can be used for after-shave - works great!

  • Homemade Recipe: 1/4 Cup Pure Aloe Vera Gel, 1/4 Cup Pure Coconut Oil, 1/4 Cup Vegetable Glycerin, 1/8 Cup Pure Castille Soap, Liquid. Stir gently together and either put in a spray bottle or apply by hand. Apply a nice coating and then shave away!
